Meet the Mountain Gorillas

Home to Half the World's Mountain Gorillas

Deep within Uganda's southwestern highlands lies Bwindi Impenetrable Forest — a primordial rainforest that shelters approximately half of the world's remaining mountain gorillas. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the most biologically diverse areas on Earth, where mist-shrouded slopes harbour over 400 gorillas in habituated family groups.

Gorilla trekking in Bwindi is consistently ranked among the world's most profound wildlife experiences. Trek through dense bamboo and ancient forest until you encounter a gorilla family — then spend a precious hour observing silverbacks, playful juveniles, and nurturing mothers in their natural habitat. It is, quite simply, unforgettable.

Gorilla Trekking Essentials

What to Expect

Your trek begins at dawn with a briefing from experienced rangers. Small groups of eight trekkers are assigned to a specific gorilla family, and trackers who have monitored the group since first light guide you through the forest.

Treks range from one to six hours depending on where the gorillas have nested. Once found, you'll have one magical hour with the family — maintaining a respectful seven-metre distance as you observe their remarkably human behaviours.

  • Best Time to Visit Jun–Sep & Dec–Feb
  • Permit Required USD 800 per person
  • Time with Gorillas 1 hour
  • Minimum Age 15 years
  • Fitness Level Moderate to challenging
