Tsavo
Land of the Red Elephants
Wild & Untamed
22,000 Square Kilometres of Raw Wilderness
Tsavo is Kenya at its most wild and untamed — a vast wilderness larger than Wales, where rust-red elephants roam across endless plains, lions prowl volcanic landscapes, and the legendary Man-Eaters of Tsavo once struck fear into the hearts of railway builders. Divided by the Nairobi-Mombasa railway into Tsavo East and Tsavo West, this is safari at its most authentic.
Here, the elephants coat themselves in the park's distinctive red soil, creating the iconic "red elephants" that have become Tsavo's symbol. Away from the crowds of the Masai Mara, Tsavo offers the raw, unfiltered African wilderness experience that first captured the world's imagination — the Africa of Hemingway and the great hunters.
Two Parks, One Wilderness
Tsavo East & Tsavo West
Tsavo East
The larger and more arid of the two, Tsavo East is defined by endless red plains, the palm-lined Galana River, and some of Kenya's largest elephant herds. The landscape is flat and open, making for exceptional game viewing.
- Galana River — lifeline of the park
- Lugard Falls — dramatic rapids and rock formations
- Yatta Plateau — world's longest lava flow
- Large elephant and buffalo herds
- Fewer tourists, more authentic experience
Tsavo West
More mountainous and scenic, Tsavo West features volcanic landscapes, ancient lava flows, and the crystal-clear waters of Mzima Springs. The terrain is more varied, with forests, hills, and wetlands.
- Mzima Springs — underwater hippo viewing
- Shetani Lava Flow — dramatic volcanic landscape
- Chaimu Crater — volcanic cone viewpoint
- Black rhino sanctuary
- Diverse habitats and birdlife
