iSimangaliso Wetland Park
Place of Miracles
Where Land Meets Sea
South Africa's First World Heritage Site
iSimangaliso — "miracle" or "wonder" in Zulu — is a place that defies expectation. Stretching 220 kilometres along South Africa's northeastern coast, this UNESCO World Heritage Site encompasses the continent's largest estuarine system, pristine beaches, ancient dune forests, and wetlands teeming with hippos, crocodiles, and over 500 bird species.
From the warm Indian Ocean where leatherback and loggerhead turtles nest each summer to the freshwater pans where elephants come to drink, iSimangaliso brings together ecosystems found nowhere else on Earth. It is the crown jewel of the African Ivory Route — where bush meets beach in spectacular fashion.
Ancient Ritual
Turtle Nesting Season
Each summer, endangered leatherback and loggerhead turtles return to the beaches where they were born, hauling themselves ashore under cover of darkness to lay their eggs in the warm sand. Join a guided night walk to witness this ancient ritual — one of nature's most moving experiences.
Nesting Season: November – March
Five Ecosystems
A World in One Park
St Lucia Estuary
Africa's largest estuarine system stretches 80km inland, home to over 800 hippos and 1,200 crocodiles. Take a boat cruise at sunset and watch these prehistoric creatures emerge as the day cools.
Coastal Forests
Ancient dune forests harbour samango monkeys, bushbuck, and spectacular birdlife. Walk through cathedral-like groves where giant fig trees tower above a carpet of ferns.
Indian Ocean
Warm tropical waters harbour coral reefs, dolphins, whale sharks, and manta rays. The Sodwana Bay reefs are South Africa's premier diving and snorkelling destination.
Wetlands & Pans
Seasonal pans attract vast flocks of flamingos and pelicans. The Mkuze swamps are a birder's paradise, with over 420 species recorded in this section alone.
Savanna & Grassland
Western sections support elephant, rhino, buffalo, and antelope. Game drives through the Mkuze and False Bay reserves offer classic safari experiences alongside the marine wonders.
Beaches & Dunes
220km of pristine coastline includes some of the world's highest forested dunes. The beaches of Cape Vidal offer safe swimming, while the remote north hosts nesting sea turtles.
